“My Gender Isn’t For You to Decide”

Date posted: July 13, 2014

Hey Friends,

As usual it’s been WAY too long. I’m trying to be better I swear! To hopefully make amends I wrote a villanelle about gender dysphoria and transphobia. Enjoy!

“My Gender Isn’t For You to Decide”

My gender isn’t for you to decide.
A man or a lady, you don’t get to say.
Who says I have to even pick a side?

When I was younger these feelings I’d hide,
and pray they never saw the light of day.
My gender isn’t for you to decide.

But there was always that aching inside,
gnawing and refusing to go away.
Who says I have to even pick a side?

I chose what fits me and my fear subsides.
But you say that this choice isn’t okay.
My gender isn’t for you to decide.

You call me names that will wound and malign,
but I prefer my life better this way.
Who says I have to even pick a side?

Now my gender is a source of my pride.
Identity’s a thing with which to play.
My gender isn’t for you to decide.
Who says I have to even pick a side?
